Hong Kong: China's 800 lb Gorilla

This is a good place to mention that China, Empire that it is, will have massive adjustments to make when the Commies are too slothful (or unable) to hold power anymore. Obvious point, granted.

But a deeper question surfaces: if HK were to rebel in a concerted manner, would ripples be felt in Beijing, or would the movement be a wimpering memory in two days?

HK is the most well develeoped part of China. If Beijing doesn't know how to manage it properly, what hope does it have to bring itself into the top echelon of nations? For all the scenarios portending China's coming dominance, might it not be simply a glorified low-rent factory nation whose leaders' paranoia effectrively checks civilization's advance?
